Ludmila Podjavorinská was one of the pen names used by Ludmila Riznerová, born in the village of Bzince pod Javorinou in Slovakia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her uncle Ludovít Rizner was a writer and encouraged her writing by submitting her work to newspapers. She published her first work as a teenager in 1887-1888, beginning with poems and progressing to prose. Although at the beginning of her literary career she often used comic characters and situations, her work gradually became more serious. She is often considered a founder of modern Slovak literature for children. In 1918, she served for a short time as an official for the local Red Cross. She was a member of Živena, the first women's organization in Czechoslovakia.
