About the Author

Valeri Petrov, the pen name used by Valeri Nissim Mevorah, was born on April 22, 1920 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He graduated with a degree in medicine from Sofia University in 1944. During World War II, he took part in the resistance against the pro-Nazi regime in Bulgaria and remained close to left-wing mostrar mais political thought throughout his life. He wrote poems, novels, film scripts, and plays. He also did translations from Russian, Italian, and English, including the complete works of William Shakespeare. In 1970, he clashed with the communist regime in Bulgaria after refusing to sign an official petition denouncing the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
