Ci sono problemi matematici che sono a prima vista impossibili da risolvere. Una delle cose davvero belle della matematica - your mileage may vary, come dicono gli anglofoni... - è che se si riscrive il problema in modo diverso ma equivalente si può scoprire che la soluzione non è poi così difficile: non dico che siamo all'uovo di Colombo, ma quasi. Bene: questo libro fa proprio questo, portando passo passo il lettore a scoprire non solo la soluzione ma anche la matematica che sta dietro di essa. Le competenze richieste sono quelle della fine delle scuole superiori: in realtà si va più avanti, ma le numerose appendici servono a spiegare le nozioni non standard, che comunque non sono certo a livello universitario. Secondo me questo libro è imprescindibile per chi vuole capire davvero perché la matematica è bella. L'ultimo capitolo, con la storia del quadro che casca togliendo uno qualunque dei chiodi a cui è appeso, secondo me ha dell'incredibile...… (mais)

To borrow a defensive statement from the character Howard Wolowitz of The Big Bang Theory I have a master's degree in mechanical engineering (usually with a "!") It's true, I do, though not from MIT, although I was accepted by MIT for graduate work (the Navy sent me instead to Texas A&M, and No... I am not an Aggie!) This book is from the MIT Press. Connections, you know. I've learned a lot of math over my life and I've read all of Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games collections. Strangely, my least favorite of Gardner's fascinations was always topology, and in this book, it was the only exploration I liked. You don't need a master's degree in mechanical engineering for this book, but you do need to have more than a passing familiarity, say rather a somewhat detailed intimacy, with math theories. And unless your only friends are colleagues in your math department, I suspect that few of these games would go over well in a social setting.

I found it interesting. You might find it more, or less, so.… (mais)
