In this cogent and well-documented study, the noted scholar Ernest A. Payne sheds light on the Tantric sect of Saktism (Shaktism). He outlines its practices; considers the rise of Sakta (Shakta) ideas in the religious literature of Hinduism; investigates some of the causes of Saktism's popularity; eflects on the intense devotion and touching faith it inspires in its followers; and examines the close connection between Saktism and some of the more extreme manifestations of modern nationalism.
