About the Author
Nigel Pavitt has spent four decades in East Africa, as army officer, business chief executive, entrepreneur, photographer and traveler. He has flown, driven, and hiked thousands of miles across its plains, through its forests, and up its mountains, camping in remote areas and experiencing its mostrar mais seasons in all conditions. Mr. Pavitt has published three previous books about Africa, two containing his photographs of tribal life and one on the early explorers of East Africa. He has been honored with an MBE (Member of the British Empire) awarded by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965 and an OGW (Order of the Grand Warrior) presented by the President of Kenya in 1993. Kenya: A Country in the Making, 1880-1940 de Nigel Pavitt
This is a photographic history of Kenya to 1940. It contains fascinating historical photos that anyone interested in Kenyan history would enjoy. Many are from private collections and are not available anywhere else in print. There is a little commentary, but it would be nice to have more explanation of the background of some of the pictures, even if it is just anecdotal and unconfirmed. Some pictures don't identify any of the people in the picture, or who took the picture or why, which I found a little disappointing. But definitely a worthwhile book.… (mais)
I grew up in central Africa, and spent time living in Nyasaland - now Malawi - which is at the southern end of the great rift valley. I thought I knew quite a lot about it's history and structure until I read this wonderfully illustrated book. Some of Nigel Pavitt's beautiful photographs awoke intense memories of my childhood - a priviledged childhood in that I was surrounded by such natural beauty which I took entirely for granted. Oh how I long for African skies, sunsets and smells.
