Add in a growing attraction between her and a young man known as the Slayer, who is in forced obedience to a fat and corrupt king. The Slayer knows the pain of loss and the anger of knowing a woman (his sister) who has been violated. He also is insightful, often pondering the disconnect between the official mindset that he and his soldiers are heroes and should be able to take whatever they like as payment for killing monsters that terrorize the kingdom, doing so from people who have almost nothing while those in the palace stuff themselves.
There are grim and uncomfortable passages in this book, but there are also ones where you silently cheer for Manisha, the girl who fell and survived, because she discovers her power to right wrongs as best she can. More is to come from the author that is set in this world and I'm eager for that to happen.… (mais)

After reading this preview, I had to know the rest of the story and purchased the kindle version of this book. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and character development. Preeti, is a doctor in search of a new roommate and finds one, but the shock comes when it's Daniel her ex from six years ago. What comes next is how to live with an ex when there's also closure needed and still an attraction. I really enjoyed the strong female chapter of Preeti even though there's work/love challenges. I also really enjoyed how the mental health stigma was handled in the book. Thanks to NetGalley for the book preview.… (mais)
