NCLA Review -Conservatively speaking, at least 99.9% of all pastors never write a systematic theology. That does not mean, however, they don’t have a theology which is systematic, and which is written. It’s just that this theology is expressed Sunday after Sunday, year after year, by way of the sermons (homilies) they preach. According to the author, Michael Pasquarello III, a professor of preaching at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was one such “homiletic” theologian, whose theology “springs from and leads to the truth and goodness of the gospel he believed, lived and proclaimed.” This book does not attempt to be another Wesley biography, nor does it analyze his sermons in any kind of systematic way. Rather, by focusing attention on Wesley as a man who read, thought and spoke theologically, it “encourages us to be more faithful ministers of the gospel.” A work of interest and real value to preachers, with extensive footnotes, providing a number of sources for further reading, this will be of limited interest to the everyday parishioner. However, Methodist congregations, or those who follow in the Wesleyan tradition, may want to add this volume to their libraries nonetheless. Rating: 3 —WS… (mais)
