A Letter From America de Geraldine O'Neill

A better book than expected, this is the story of 3 sisters dealing with a huge family secret & dysfunction in 1960s Ireland. It should have been the story of 2 sisters--the plot is advanced mainly by their stories, the 3rd feels like a distraction. The main stories are well-told, one leading to discovering the secret. The end tidied up too quickly. I would have preferred a 2nd book. A light read good for a pandemic.

Tara Flynn de Geraldine O'Neill

Very Irish soap opera story.

Poor Tara, grew up with her beloved grandfather, as her father was a drunk. She befriends the wealthy family that lives in the "big house" and (surprise!) falls in love with her friends brother.

You know the rest.

Cara Gayle de Geraldine O'Neill

I think this book was originally published with the main character called Aisling, rather than Cara (I presume because Cara's a more familiar name to non-Irish readers). However, occasionally we still get references to Cara's 'unusual name' and she somehow manages to be referred to as 'Ash-leen' by another character who knows her well. There also seems to be a lack of full stops at the end of sentences and big breaks between words. Surely somebody proof read this?

Not as good as Tara Flynn or The Grace Girls, Cara's stuck in a marriage with a cheating husband and falls in love while on holiday. Cara's mother has to be one of the most annoying characters ever...and her strict Catholicism doesn't seem to translate to a modern day reader- divorce him, get over it.

Buy it from the bargain bin and use it as your third back up holiday book.… (mais)
