About the Author

Michael Ondaatje was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) on September 12, 1943. He moved to Canada in 1962 and became a Canadian citizen. He received a B.A. from the University of Toronto and a M.A. from Queen's University, Kingston, and taught English at York University. He has written several volumes mostrar mais of poetry, novels, and other works including There's a Trick with a Knife I'm Learning to Do, The Dainty Monsters, Rat Jelly, Coming through Slaughter, Running in the Family, In the Skin of a Lion, Anil's Ghost, and The Cat's Table. His title, Warlight, made the bestseller list in 2018. Ondaatje has won numerous awards including the Canadian Governor General's Award in 1971 for The Collected Works of Billy the Kid and the Booker Prize in Fiction for The English Patient, which was adapted into a film in 1996. Michael Ondaatje writes beautifully. Characters with dimension, places I can see clearly through his prose. “Warlight” has all that. It also has a most intriguing first line, the mark of a great storyteller. Reeled me right in: “In 1945 our parents went away and left us in the care of two men who may have been criminals.” It took me three weeks to read this book of 285 pages, though, because I could put it down. It took me quite a while to become invested in the story that was being told. I enjoyed it, but did not love it.… (mais)

An insightful accounting of a boy's growing awareness of his unique personhood, at first seen through the eyes of a diverse group of fellow passengers, and then through his awakening mind's eye. I would definitely want to be seated at the Cat's Table!

Gorgeous language, mysterious characters, lives that intersect in geographical space and across time. Who is real, and who is fictional? Who is telling the stories? The blue table!
