Pequena biografia
Nicola Cornick was born in Yorkshire, England, within a stone's throw of the moors that had inspired the Bronte sisters to write Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. One of her grandfathers was a poet. With such a background it was impossible for Nicola not to become a writer.

Nicola studied history at London University and has done a variety of jobs, from sticking price tags on shoes in a factory to serving refreshments on a steam railway. She lived for seven years in a cottage haunted by the ghost of a cavalier. It was here that she wrote her first historical romance for Mills & Boon. Since then she has written more than 15 novels for Mills & Boon (reedited by Harlequin), and been nominated for a number of awards including the British Romance Prize by the Romantic Novelists' Association, and RITA by the Romance Writers of America, and a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice award. She is a Membership Secretary for the RNA and critique manuscripts for aspiring authors via the RNA's New Writers' Scheme, and also for the RWA Beau Monde mentor scheme.

17th Century London and Rose Cassell is in prison awaiting her fate or the whim of her infamous sister Nell Gwyn, implicated in a plot to steal the Crown jewels Rose's life is forfeit. However fate brings Rose to Becote Manor near Oxford where she finds contentment and love. Modern day London and Jess is trying to lie low after a scandal involving her ex, that's not easy when your sister is a TV celebrity. however Tavy does offer Jess a lifeline, to act as housekeeper at Fortune Hall, the mansion she is restoring.
This is a very lightweight novel which does have historical background but which wears history very light. For that reason I didn't love it as much as like it. The plot is simple and the characters endearing enough, I could even cope with the slight hint of supernatural visions etc. It's a perfectly pleasant way to spend a few undemanding hours.

I love "A Handful of Gold" by Mary Balogh, it's one of my most favourite Christmas short stories. Nothing realistic here, but so cute and sweet!

This is the second book that I have read by the author. This is another dual timeline story set in the present and the past. In this book we follow Jess who after a disastrous relationship goes to live with her influencer sister Tavy at Becote Manor. In the past we follow Nell Gywn but mainly her sister Rose who had a connection to the Manor.

I enjoyed this book but it didn't wow me. I was interested to know about Rose as I knew nothing about her at all, even googling doesn't give much more than what is covered in the book. I know a bit more about Nell Gwyn but the story is more about Rose.

I enjoy dual timeline stories and especially when they are about real historical people. This offering dud hold my interest and there was a hint of a ghost story to it. I did find some of the plot go into thrillerland and I couldn't quite get on board with it.

I would read more by the author in the future as I do enjoy these types of books. This was an OK read for me.

Thank you to the publisher via Netgalley for the book to review.
