- Donal Nevin was a native of county Limerick. He was an Irish trade unionist and was a former General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. He was also a founder member of the ESRI, a lifelong member of the Irish Labour Party and from 1974-2002 was a member of the Irish Times Trust.

Anyone beginning a study of Larkin should use this book as a starting point for its comprehensive detail of source material, correspondence and references about Larkin and his career in trade unionism and in party politics as well as that of his family life. By and large the contributors are overwhelmingly praiseworthy of Larkin but other works which take different views are referenced and given fair hearing. The book is a useful analytical tool to decide on what other works to access.
