Péter Nádas

Based on other reviews I read of this novel, I felt I would be gaining some interesting, intelligent, and well thought out insights into how the people of Hungary dealt with the atrocities committed against them by The Germans during World War Two, and then by The Russians during The Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Sadly, that was not the case. Because, while yes, these moments in history were covered; so,so,so much of this novel revolved around the degenerate,deviant, and perverse sexual acts of the characters. And if that weren't enough, these same characters also have sexual fantasies, which are of course, even more extreme. Seeing that this novel contained over a 1,000 pages you'd think the author could have found ways to include topics of a more noble nature, rather than focusing so much on the characters depravities. Nádas has certainly written a monumental exploration of time, history, belonging, estrangement, and how the personal and the political affect individuals and their relationships with others. Roughly speaking, Parallel Stories centralizes the Lippy-Lehr and the Dohring families, exploring main members of each family, their lovers and more distant relations, their friends, and even the friends of their friends.

While such a project, especially one of this length, could easily have been labeled a group of short stories with a loose theme tying them all together, Nádas does indeed succeed at making Parallel Stories a novel. However, if his claim—as he has stated—was to create "a monument to incompleteness," the length of this novel is a problem: there is nothing that warrants such a lengthy examination (which results, at some points in iterative narrative arcs and redundant—because they are repeated so often—flashbacks in history), and this novel would have greatly benefited from a more concise and less broad structure.

There are some Proustian moments here, an author with whom Nádas is often compared; but whereas Proust's project actually solicits the volumes it takes for his narrator to reach the end of the Recherche, nothing in Parallel Stories does. The philosophical investigations here on time, history, individuality, isolation, desire, and self-annihilation do have their moments of brave insight and often prophetic assessments of our relation to our histories and to history itself, but Nádas often loses track quickly and focuses (almost solely) on the body, defecation, fluids, and sex. I agree with Scott Espositio's review to which I've linked above in that these Proustian moments are mixed with a kind of nineteenth-century realism which seems at odds with Nádas's project entirely, and so this works to make Parallel Stories a less effective work—mixing experimental, nonlinear writing with more cliched and hackneyed plot lines—than had Nádas stayed within the medium of memory and shifting temporalities.… (mais)

Az ilyen kis encsembencsem-könyvek* azért vannak, hogy az ember elolvassa őket, és az elolvasás után is időnként elővegye, hálatelt szívvel lapozgassa, és örüljön, hogy van. Épp ezért az illusztrációk benne csaknem olyan fontosak, mint maga a szöveg – ezért e két elemet külön értékelem.

1.) Szöveg. Nádas Péter. Nádas Péter az Nádas Péter. Világklasszis. Még ha „csak” középkori várostanulmányt ír, a sólepárlásról meg harangok hangzásáról beszél (erős túlzással: a semmiről), az is kész öröm, mert szemet gyönyörködtetően tiszta és szép és egész minden sora. Nem értek azzal egyet, hogy bizonyos szövegeit nem kéne könyv formátumban megjelentetni, egyszerűen azért, mert egy világklasszisnak minden szava arany – kereskedelmi értelemben is, de irodalmi értelemben is, mert potenciálisan ott van benne az ő sajátos talentuma, még ha félálomban írta is. (Ha meg nincs benne, hát az külön érdekes, és ezért kell megjelentetni.) Szóval adjunk csak ki minden szöveget a nagyoktól, legfeljebb mi lepontozzuk.
2.) Illusztráció. Az az alapelvem, hogy általában véve a művészetek esetében a technikai tudásnál fontosabb, hogy az embert a mű elgondolkodtassa. De ha az ember azért gondolkodik el bizonyos rajzokon, mert nem érti, hogy kerülhettek egyáltalán bele a kötetbe, az régen rossz. Nem arról van szó, hogy Forgách kategorikusan rosszul rajzolna – én például férfiasan bevallom, nem tudnék olyan harangot alkotni, mint ő**. De én nem is vetemednék arra, hogy egy Nádas-könyvbe belefirkálgassak. Csak hogy értsük: van egy Nobel-aspiráns írónk, akinek a munkáját illusztrálni kéne. Józan paraszti ésszel azt gondolnám, hogy ilyenkor megkeresnek egy olyan illusztrátort, aki szakmájában hasonlóan az elit része. Ehelyett mi történt? Megkértek egy írót (értsd: egy nem-illusztrátort, vagyis egy lelkes amatőrt), hogy bariságból skicceljen már egyet-kettőt a lapszélre. Mit mondhatnék erre?

A kis (és amúgy tipográfiailag csinos) kötet két annyira elütő minőségből áll, amit én egyszerűen képtelen vagyok összeegyeztetni. Próbáltam, de elzsibbadt tőle a nyúltagyam. Ezért nem is csillagozom – nincs szívem lehúzni Nádas szövegeit csak azért, mert valaki valahol úgy gondolta, hogy jó ötlet ilyen házibarkács grafikákkal megtámogatni őket.

* Vagyis olyan könyv, ami kicsi, szép, de cserébe drága. És még mielőtt bárki felemlegetné, hogy ezek a kötetek a zsebmetszés minősített esetei, meg kell jegyezzem: az ilyen drágaságok azért nyertek mostanában teret, mert megfelelő kiadói válaszok az e-könyvre – olyan helyre viszik el az irodalmat, ahová az elektronikus tartalom nem tudja követni őket.
** Viszont dögöljek meg, ha kört és ellipszist nem rajzolok pontosabban, mint Forgách. És hogy forgassam még a kést: legalább öt ismerősömet meg tudnám nevezni, aki harangot IS jobban rajzol.… (mais)
