NCLA Review - In the busy world of the 21st century, are we not in need of quiet, spiritual contemplation and a closer intimacy with Christ? The author believes so and introduces the reader to the Beguines. These groups, usually women, broke with the tradition and expectation of medieval Europe and lived and worked outside of set boundaries. Their piety was centered on the Eucharist and the humanity of Jesus. Several wrote of their devotional life experiences, and these are the foundations of Myers’s book. He draws from the Beguines and asks the reader for a personal response to each chapter. These responses take the form of journaling, scripture, creativity, action and finally community. The book sets a very high standard of personal work for the reader, but one that could only bring amazing results. Rating: 3 —JD… (mais)
