Nice book by the founder of Daily Kos in which he makes links between the extreme tactics and belief systems of the Taliban (and other fundamentalist Muslim extremists) and the modern American conservative movement (which he calls the American Taliban). Certainly, some of his parallels are overstated and some linkages are dependent on taking words out of the context in which they were originally said. However, many of the linkages are spot on.

In the chapter on "War," Markos begins by detailing the bloodthirstiness of many in the modern conservative movement and their willingness to wage ongoing war against other nations. But he continues in the chapter by relating example after example of American men engaged in killings and shootings, much of which would be considered terrorism under different circumstances but seems to be the default position for those in the "American Taliban." (The "foot soldiers" in the "American Taliban" are influenced by their "leaders," namely, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and Fox News.)

Through six chapters on power, war, sex, women, culture, and truth, Markos draws the parallels between the extremists modern conservatives claim to be against and the conservatives themselves, showing that the modern conservative movement acts, believes, speaks, and behaves just like their counterparts they oppose.

If you are a conservative, you will hate this book. If you are a liberal, you are likely to enjoy it (with a couple caveats as mentioned in my first paragraph). In a big way, Markos is "preaching to the choir." But for those who hear the notes, this song is a very familiar song.

Covers lots of well covered ground, but does a good job updating pragmatic activism (think Alinsky's Rules for Radicals) for the internet era

This book, by the founder of the Daily Kos website, is a guide to effective political activism. This is the second book that I've read recently that speaks highly of Saul Alinsky's book Rules for Radicals as being a blueprint for progressive action, and Zuniga seems to see his book as a modernization of that book.

The Table of Contents serves as an outline for the book. The chapters are the New Insurgents, Mobilize, Set the Narrative, Reinvent the Street Protest, Feed the Backlash, don't Believe the Hype, Fight Small, Win big, the Unlikely Warriors, and the Epilogue. Each chapter is broken down into subsections, and each one includes success stories.

It is interesting that one of Zuniga's principles is to not let success go to your head, instead to keep the goals and objectives in mind.

Great book for activists, that is, anyone at any level interested in changing the world.

4165 Crashing the Gate Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics, by Jerome Armstrong [&] Markos Moulitsas Zuniga (read 24 May 2006) This is a 2005 book by a couple of prominent bloggers. It says lots of things: it is against people who voted for the Iraq war, against political consultants such as Bob Shrum, who ran 8 losing campaigns and 0 winning ones, against people who oppose a Democrat because he is pro-life, and it claims Democrats don't need "soft money." Much of what the authors say makes sense, but the best part of the book is its enthusiastic optimism, and its insistence that the Democrats should fight every congressional district--which seems wise. It is nice to read such enthusiastic pushing for an open-tent Democratic party.… (mais)
