About the Author

Karol Modzelewski was born Kiryl Budniewicz in Moscow, Russia on November 23, 1937. After World War II, his family moved to Poland. He received a degree in history from the University of Warsaw in 1959. He was an assistant professor there, with interruptions for prison, until 1971. He was a vocal mostrar mais dissident to the Communist regime in Poland. He moved to Wroclaw after being forced by the authorities to leave Warsaw. He continued his research at the University of Wroclaw until 1980, when he joined Solidarity, the labor movement that helped topple the Communist regime in Poland. He was Solidarity's spokesman until 1981 when he stepped down to protest a decision by the movement's leadership to end a strike. He was a senator from 1989 to 1991. He returned to teaching and served as a deputy president of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 2007 to 2010. He wrote several books including Barbarian Europe. Książka nie tyle opisuje "barbarzyńską Europę", co zapisane prawa ludów z obszarów poza Cesarstwem Rzymskim (i tych obszarów Cesarstwa, które zajęły). Opis dobry, ale doszukiwanie się barbarzyńskiego dziedzictwa w różnych późniejszych instytucjach czy obrzędach nieco na siłę. Wymóg jednomyślności mógł zostać wprowadzony więcej niż raz, a skoro tak, to i skłonność do nakłaniania opornych siłą. Jest możliwe, że polskie sejmiki odziedziczyły ten wymóg po wiecach, ale czy musiało tak być? Więc to mało przekonujące.

A że większości cech barbarzyńskich kultur jednak nie odziedziczyliśmy, to tylko się wypada cieszyć.
