The detailed outlines at the beginning of each chapter are an organizational feat. They’re also a great help in understanding the passage!

Title: Exalting Jesus in Philippians (Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary)
Author: Tony Merida, etc.
Pages: 288
Year: 2016
Publisher: Holman Reference
My rating is 5 stars.
These commentaries are written to expound Biblical truth and provide questions that help people think or meditate on what they are studying. I found that the questions can be answered via journal, used in a small group setting or to elicit deeper examination of the text. I reviewed another commentary by these publishers that focused on 1 & 2 Kings that revealed to me Jesus in the Old Testament in a way I never say Him before!
Here in Philippians the authors go in smaller amounts of verses as the book of Philippians is only four chapters in length. Sometimes as I am reading the commentary after reading the Scripture portion in my Bible, I get antsy. As I pondered why, it became clear that in our instant society it really takes a decision to be still and know God. There isn’t anything instant in our walk with the Lord; it takes a person who decides to have the self-control to study, read or meditate on Scripture when other people or life is knocking on his/her door.
It is my sincerest desire to know him deeper, point others to Him and above all glorify Him with my life. There is no short cut or formula in this relationship with God because it is a relationship not a nonliving activity to check off daily. I appreciate the author’s insights, questions and encouragement to grow in my knowledge of Him which in turn helps grow my prayer life, loving others, and more. I want to continue to do so until I take my last breath here on earth and my first in heaven. How about you?

The brand new Christ-Centered Exposition series edited by David Platt, Danny Aiken, and Tony Merida, looks to be one of my go-to's as a pastor. I am always looking for succinct, mildly-technical, mostly-pastoral offerings. In the past, the Preaching the Word series, edited and mostly authored by Kent Hughes, has fit that bill. I'm glad to say that, at the very least, Ephesians by Tony Merida in the Christ-Centered Exposition series is a home run winner!

The commentary is laid out like it was probably a sermon series by Merida at one point. His headings are driven by the text, but presented in a way that is homiletically pleasing. While he isn't overly-illustrated, he offers illustrations where they are appropriate. Some are personal to him and didn't translate well into my pulpit ministry. Merida has a solid theological frame-work. He is mildly Reformed, but is clearly not an undiapered Calvinist. His main concern is to address the text.

I would highly recommend Ephesians to pastors, small group leaders, or even laymen looking for a meatier study aid in their personal time with the Lord. This is an excellent tool for the church!

Title: Exalting Jesus in 1 & 2 Kings (Christ Centered Exposition)
Author: Tony Merida
Pages: 228
Year: 2015
Publisher: Holman Reference
My rating is 5 stars.
Why did I want to read a commentary on 1 & 2 Kings in the Old Testament? What drew me was the
“Exalting Jesus” part of the title. Many Christians dwell in the New Testament without reading, studying or knowing what riches are revealed in the Old Testament. However, I thank God that He has led me to the Old Testament many times so as to reveal the truths that aren’t quickly seen with just a perusal of that portion of the Bible.
Usually I read the sections listed before reading a commentary; however, this time I wanted to challenge myself by listening to the Word. Really listening to it and not casually hearing. The commentary is not a verse by verse exposition, but a section by section commentary that I believe will draw many readers. There aren’t notations about the original language or that it is written for purely academic reasons. In fact, it is written to help all followers of Christ see Christ in the Old Testament.
There are many nuggets of truth that I enjoyed contemplating from the author of the commentary after listening to the Bible section being covered. I enjoyed the way the Lord was active and speaking to His people, as well as relearning what happened in ancient Israel with her kings. Both types of earthly kings, evil and good, show us our own personal need for a King and not just any King, but the King of Kings who reigns and will one day return!
If you truly desire to grow in Christ, then don’t dwell exclusively in the New Testament. That’s only ½ of the book. There is much for all of us to see and learn from in the many Old Testament books because through them we begin to see Christ. The New Testament shows us the fulfillment of many Old Testament promises as well as examples of how God’s people did and didn’t please Him.
Here is a commentary that will aid in your understanding and help you see Christ in the Old Testament, and I hope it whets your appetite to learn more from these books. The author has questions after each chapter that can be used to journal answers, use as a means to pray or as a springboard to a deeper study. Either way let’s remain students of the whole Bible, disciples of the Christ foreshadowed in the Old Testament and unveiled in the New.
