George W. Meek

An autobiographical account of the life of George Meek whose occupation was a bath-chairman** in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Through a common interest in socialism, George met and was mentored by HG Wells who encouraged him to write this account of his life as there were so few works written about the life of labouring men by actual labouring men. The book was a success in the UK and in the USA thanks to the preface written by HG Wells. The book is now an important record of life in Eastbourne c1860-1900 and also as an early account of the development of socialism in England. The later book "George Meek: Labouring Man: Protege of HG Wells" by Coxall & Griggs (1996) is an essential companion as is "George Meek's Grandfather" by Geoffrey Barber, the latter investigating the life of the benevolent unnamed grandfather mentioned in the book and containing material on George Meek's family background and genealogy.

** A Bath chair (named after its city of origin, Bath) was a popular form of transport for ladies and people convalescing at sea-side resorts and was used for journeys to the theatre, shopping or sightseeing. The chair was on two large wheels with a smaller pivoting wheel at the front which could be turned with a long handle. The vehicle was either pushed or pulled by the chair-man.
