This is a quick short read. Molly Graham works for a very special museum in New York. It’s a museum of literature. And her museum is just getting ready to start an exhibit on Jane Austin, and some books have been lent from a very private estate in the UK. On the night of the big Premier party, our main gal, Molly has had enough of peopleing and goes back to find there’s a stranger in her office. Figuring this stranger is some ductal candidate they have a fantastically fun night together as this new British guy, Al, just wants to see the sites of New York. They have an amazing couple of months together and Molly thinks things are going somewhere until one day she is ghosted. She is left at the Met and her date never shows up. When the end of the exhibit comes, she’s travels to the UK to return the book and finds, her Al waiting for her. This book is exactly what someone expects when they read the title and the description. This book has all the tropes, but you love them. This book is very predictable, but the book is about the ride and how you get from the beginning to end, then the ability to predict, the happily ever after. This was a fun romcom and I really enjoyed it. It was just the perfect length. Any longer and it would have veered towards boring or overdone. This is the first book in a series and it was good enough, I’d pick up the second book.… (mais)

Lindsey and Sully are in Chicago for an archivist convention when Lindsey finds a tote bag with a very rare book in it under her conference seat. They turn it in to the convention coordinator – a former professional collector of such finds – then start making their way home to Briar Creek on an overnight train. Straight out of Christie’s playbook, they wake the next morning to find that the coordinator, who was also homeward bound on the same train, has been murdered, and somehow that rare book has made its way back into Lindsey’s possession. But that’s just the beginning of their troubles when the murder train stops in Briar Creek and the suspects are all bunking in the local inn during a major snowstorm.

There’s a lot going on in this entry in the series, and it’s all a bit jumbled, to be honest. It seems that all cozy mystery series start to fray around the edges at some point, and I’m afraid this one is starting to show signs of unraveldom. I’ll stick with it for now because I like the characters, but if the writing gets much worse I’ll likely jump ship soon.

This book was not my cup of tea, there was nothing bad about it, it simply was not for me and I should have stopped reading it. But I didn’t and here goes.

I really think my disappointment in the book was because it felt way too much like a lesser version of Eat, Pray, Love. Written in the context of a 29 year old on a quest to three countries to rekindle old flames and to find herself, Paris is Always a Good Idea fell short in comparison. It is not the author’s fault that I am decades older than her protagonist and found myself rolling my eyes at her inexperience and naiveté, or that I happened to have read EPL in the past two months, or that I finished the book when I probably should have just stopped reading.

This all being said, none of the above is why the 4, not 5 stars. The book was very well written but was far too predictable, at every turn. I found myself making a game out of the predictability, which took me out of the moment. Ms. McKinlay wrote a very good book, and I am sure the younger crowd resonated with it - I think I saw where a movie is coming out about the book; far be it for me to say it was anything other than five stars.

Lindsey and her husband Sully are returning home on a train, following a library conference in Chicago. Lindsey finds a rare book that was left under her chair at the conference. She returns the book to the director, but then the book goes missing again, and the director is found dead in his private compartment on the train. The attendees of the conference are detained at the next stop, which happens to be where Lindsey and Sully live. A major snowstorm adds to the anxiety of the people involved, and still more trouble is in store for Lindsey and Sully. It’s an entertaining and exciting cozy, and sure to please readers of this wonderful series.… (mais)
