Got this a while back as a member giveaway on Library Thing. It's a collection of stories about graveyards throughout Wisconsin. The author appears to have done quite a bit of research on each of the stories within the book, many of which have pictures from the author having visited the specified grave site.

I was so happy to have won this book, Badger Boneyards: The Eternal Rest of the Story, through Library Thing's Member's giveaway Program. I have always been fascinated with cemeteries and the stories associated with them and with the people buried there. This book satisfied my interest with the stories of the long-time dead and the cemeteries they are buried in. This book focuses on some of the various cemeteries located throughout Wisconsin. I'd like to list my favorite stories but most of them were my favorites! The author did extensive research for this compilation and it's evident he also had fun in the process.… (mais)

Although a frequent visitor to Wisconsin, I have never been to Bayfield or the Apostle Islands but there was something about this book that attracted my attention. Maybe it was the thought of learning about another part of that beautiful state. You cannot judge a book by its cover, but this one catches the eye. A colorful waterfront scene that appears to be a montage draws the reader into “This Superior Place”.

Inside we find a history book. It follows the story of Bayfield from the native and early European settlements through the arrival of the railroad, the rise and fall of logging, fishing, agriculture and, most recently, tourism as the drivers of the local economy. Set off sections feature individuals, natural features, civic events and local cuisine that make Bayfield the special place that it is.

Then there are the Apostle Islands, those Lake Superior refuges that attract those drawn to unspoiled regions. I was surprised to read that the Islands have been extensively logged and, while nature holds sway, they are not virgin wilderness. Still there is something compelling about them.

Author Dennis McCann has done an excellent job of combining a well written text with current and historical photos of the area. What is most distinctive about this book is the contrast between old black and white pictures with modern color versions of the same scenes.

Whether your interest is in Bayfield and the Apostles themselves, a slice of North Country history or just a treat for the mind and the eyes, “This Superior Place” is one you will not want to miss. As I mentioned, I have never visited this area but now, maybe I should.

I did receive a free copy of this book for review.
