It has been years since I read the first in this series, Daughter of the Forest, so it was nice to return to world of Sevenwaters however by about 60% I was a bit bored and skimmed the rest. I want to finish this series, or at least the first three books - I will be back!

The second of the Blackthorn and Grim books involves a monster wailing in a tower and causing depression throughout a region and a woman who requests help from Prince Oren, fishing for Blacktorn's help - which she gets, but oh boy is there a whole lot of things aren't right here tell more than show, and the choice to go with a long drawn out plot was not a good one - there's really enough for a novella here.

This novel is the first of a series centered around a wise woman subject to geas/geis, not at all a favorite fantasy trope of mine and less frequently seen since the mid-20th century. Still since the plot of this story is less about the mc and more about the prince's bride it does not do great violence to the book as a whole.
Violence, especially against women, and deceit are predominate elements in the tale.

I liked it. Story was not overly complicated, but it was well told and felt natural. For some of the characters the writing style felt a little distant at first, but I got used to it. And I liked the characters. I liked the team and team loyalty.
It's a pity there are so few women on Swan island, but on the other hand, her team mates never seemed to make a point of Liobhan's abilities. She was not doubted for being a woman, at least not by them.
