JOIN Sara Marcus, Jacinta Bunnell, AND UV! (LOCAL RIOT GRRRL-INSPIRED BAND) FOR A DAY OF FEMINISM, ZINE-MAKING, COLORING BOOKS, CREATIVITY AND LIVE MUSIC. Authors Sara Marcus (Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution) and Jacinta Bunnell (Girls Are Not Chicks) will read from their books and lead a zine-making workshop. UV! will get us dancing with their authoritative sound. In this hands-on workshop, you will create a zine of your very own to take home. Zines are D.I.Y. photocopied publications about anything - lists, letters, true stories, music, adventures, fiction, gripes, etc. Zines are motivated by desire for self-expression, not for profit. By making a zine, you get to put your ideas out into the world--in a concrete physical form--without anybody else editing you or telling you what to say. Some zines are how-to zines or are made to express visual or art ideas. Some zines just tell stories or read like diaries. Zines played an integral role in communicating feminist ideas during the riot grrrl movement, frequently drawing out the political implications of people’s first-hand experiences with issues of violence, gender, sexuality, race, ability and identity, You may bring some written ideas, collage materials, photos and magazines to make your zine. _________________________________________________________ OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES: 11:10 AM Elizabeth Mitchell gives an overview/intro about the day. 11:15 AM- 12:00 PM Sara reads from Girls to the Front & takes questions.
