This book is both Finished reading, and Currently reading. In full disclosure, I met Rod Manis when the book was in pre-publication. I built the system on the Korn Shell of the day: 1987, and am maintaining, upgrading a version on bash today. While my model was "all functions", which is possible to do. Now the heavy lifting commands -- row, column, compute, ... -- are in separate, executable files. With a function library to source and you're good to go. My objective in owning a copy of the book is to complete a full implementation with a few exceptions for historical reasons. The open areas of my /rdb: ve, and index.
