Nicole and Tom are childhood sweetheart. Then something happens that they never expected and creates a life-changing event...they win the lottery. When they move into a beautiful "smart home" on the grounds of Lancaut Manor, they thought their dreams had come true...but their dream soon turns into a nightmare. Tom is found dead in the swimming pool. The question the police have to answer is "was it an accident or something much more sinister?" Nicole feels like a little fish in a big glass bowl, surrounded by sharks and piranhas. It's a chilling thriller that really gives the saying "be careful what you wish for" legs as the consequences of sudden wealth is explored along with many hidden threats. The story can be described as a "closed room" thriller as nearly everyone is a suspect. The suspense keeps the reader guessing as secrets unravel. It starts out a bit slow but keep reading...you won't regret it.… (mais)

Thank you to the author and William Morrow for the chance to read the Advance Reader's Edition of this book.

Three couples have planned a long weekend away at a remote barn in the countryside. At the last minute, the arrival of the husbands are all delayed so the wives go out on their own. When they arrive, the owners drive them up to the barn and inform them that a package had been delivered and left at the barn for them. They each think it's a surprise from their husband. When they get there, the package contains a bottle of champagne and a letter from another friend whose husband had recently passed away. The letter states that she didn't join because she's "not welcome" and that by the time they read the letter, she will have "killed" one of their husbands.

This is how the long weekend starts. The letter sends them all into their own downward spiral, each worrying about their respective husbands. There is no cell signal at the barn and a storm is rolling in. One of them decides to venture out into the storm on her own, another gets black-out drunk and the third tries to go out and find the other woman.

Throw in secrets that they all have hidden from each other and you have a proper whodunit. Twisty and told in alternating POVs, I found that I didn't want to stop reading.

This was the first book I've read by Gill Macmillan. It centers around Rachel, her son Ben and Ben's dad, John. John and Rachel are divorced. Ben lives with Rachel. One day, she and Ben are out for a walk with their dog and Ben disappears. Jim Clemo is assigned to investigate Ben's disappearance. Rachel's sister comes to live with her during this time and ends up revealing a family secret that Rachel never knew. This is the only thing that I can of that would apply to the "what she knew" that is the title of the book.… (mais)
