A singer, song-writer, and multi-instrumentalist, he has released five albums under the name Mull Historical Society, as well as two albums under his own name. Pairing a new author with someone more experienced in a two-story collection that focuses on place is a good idea. Unfortunately, in this case, the new writer's work suffered in comparison to that of the established writer, seeming juvenile and unpolished. I was greatly entertained by Colin MacIntyre's memoir and would happily spend more time in his company. I didn't get anything from Ellen MacAskill's novella about returning home to small town life as an out bisexual. Her main character was devoid of emotion but it wasn't written in a way that lifted the narrative out of dullness. I'm older and it's not my life experience, but a better writer would have taken me along with them and made me care.… (mais)
