Lisa Louis once worked as a hostess for a while. It was quite common for foreign girls to do hostessing in the eighties and nineties. It is a hard job, especially if you want to be good at it. Louis is best when she speaks about her personal experiences as a foreigner in an unknown environment. Some of the anecdotes are rather good. However, she is a terrible writer. The language is clumsy and not very elegant at all. The book is at its worst when she tries to move into areas that she has no personal experience with, which it does a lot of the time. She interviews a yakuza guy at some point but doesn't really ask the right questions. Not the worst book in the world, and if you have a special interest in this subject, then by all means read it.… (mais)
