As the subtitle says, an environmental history of the Santa Crux River. Interesting to me because I am a Tucson native and the Santa Cruz is our source of water, CAP not withstanding. The book certainly drives home what all of us here know in our hearts- water in our desert home is a scarce and wonderful thing that probably won't support all the people that move here. In a larger context, the concept of endless growth on the entire planet lurks behind the 'effecient use' of our resources for an ever increasing population. When and where does 'growth' turn into a cancer that eats its host? Who knows. All in all, a good read if you're interested in Southwestern history or rivers and their environment; otherwise gets rather dry in spots. Has great maps of the area involved.… (mais)
