This graphic novel helps children understand the struggles of being a child with allergies, but it is also a story about friendship, family, and dealing with change.

Maggie wants a pet more than anything. She is excited to celebrate her 10 birthday and get a dog of her own. Things are hectic right now – a new baby is on the way, her twin brothers are so annoying, and she will be going to a new school in the Fall for 5th grade. A puppy will be something just for her.

Instead of enjoying her new pet, Maggie breaks out in hives. She is allergic to all animals with fur and feathers! Readers follow Maggie as she tries to find the perfect pet despite her allergies. Maggie tries to overcome some pet obstacles and thinks she has, with the help of a new friend, found a compromise between her allergy and a little furry friend.

Maggie is a spunky protagonist who is adjusting to a new school, new family dynamics, and searching for new friends. The illustrations for the graphic novel are bright, fun and pull you into Maggie’s world. Readers of Raina Telgemeier and Jennifer Holm will enjoy this book. This is a sweet story - graphics are good, lots pink and feminine colors. Not as expressive as some other J graphic novels I have read.

This was a terribly problematic graphic novel but least the end was good; I'm surprised that it even got an award. Two characters in this novel were so irresponsible because the teacher brought a class pet in and didn't realise that Maggie was allergic? I felt bad for the pet being alone and stuck in a cage like that. The plot is that Maggie discovered she was allergic and she tries to find a pet that doesn't trigger her allergies but she is so irresponsible; she just gives away or returns pets because she doesn't like them.

She had a fish once but it died and she also bought a mouse on her own without letting her parents know despite knowing that she was allergic to it and she returned that? I really don't understand why Maggie got so mad over her friend by calling her a traitor just because she had a dog (Can't she just tell her friend that she's allergic to some pets so her friend would understand?), nor why she felt so frustrated because of her new sister. I liked the ending though since it was very sweet and heartwarming. If you like graphic novels try Tin Man by Justin Madson instead of this.
