This is the story of a girl growing up on a farm in Scotland in the 1880s, where she is being raised by her grandparents. She loves the farm and the farm animals with all of her heart and has a companion jackdaw and a steady friend in the hired boy. Lizzie does have one thing that sets her apart; sometimes she has brief visions of future events. But this story remains one about a girl growing up and of a young woman figuring out how to make her way in the world and how best to care for those she loves.

I saw a review calling this book "Anne of Green Gables for adults" and that's a pretty accurate description, honestly. This novel deals far more with the darker parts of farm life and of that time, the risks of death or injury, the financial precarity, the way that most people are struggling to get by and a single mistake can cost everything. Lizzie is pragmatic and resourceful, like all good protagonists. I enjoyed every single moment I was reading this excellent book.

another margot livesey book, and probably my last for a while. not too different from the previous, although the characters were slightly more interesting. 4 characters are intertwined and each refers to a different literary character. charles dodgson, emily bronte, keats, and dickens. again, poor communication was a major problem leading to tragedy.

I liked this better than criminals by livesey, although these 2 books did have similarities. The protagonists were very self-aware and also concened about the feelings of other people and of animals. Iliked the beginning of the book and the end better than the middle chapters when every member of the family was dealing with major issues. I also liked that she showed us that life is difficult, and some problems just can't be solved. I also appreciated the numerous historical, literary, and philosophical references. Without them, the book could have turned in to a banal melodrama. I also liked the fact that this family cared so much for each other.… (mais)

This turned out better than expected, although reading on i still must get used to reading on an ipad.even though all characters had major flaws, i did care about many of them. there were 3 main simultaneous story lines, which made it somewhat difficult. as a stutterer, i was surprised at the theories regarding stuttering and the important point it played. there were so many rationalizations presented, but many of the characters did achieve growth in their self awareness.
