Pequena biografia
p.d.r. lindsay (no capitals please in tribute to one of her favourite poets, e. e. cummings) makes New Zealand home. Born in Ireland, educated in England, Canada, and New Zealand, and having worked in many different countries, she calls herself a citizen of the world.
As a novelist she prefers writing historical stories about ordinary people, the ones whose names and lives we don't know much about. Major events and political figures, Kings and Queens are well chronicled in the usual history books. It is how those events affected ordinary people which stimulate her to first reading the diaries and letters of parsons and farmers, wives and husbands, brothers and sisters, merchants and tradesmen and then finding a way of telling their stories.

The story is set from July to September 1887, following the life of Tizzie - nicknamed based on her excited and restless state - through a hard lifestyle. The story is heart-wrenching and difficult to read, but demonstrates the changes since those times.

I quickly became invested in the main character so I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was well plotted and well written.

Full disclosure: This book was given to me at The Library Thing, so I didn't have to pay for it. I also emailed the author, regarding some questions on the text.

At first, I had a few misgivings about the book, as it started with a girl fleeing her brother and someone else who wanted to sell her as a prostitute, and I thought the tale would be either very sad or a story of fighting the odds; I was wrong. Then there were two other stories about, let`s say, typical old Japan situations, samurais and all.

I was wrong. The stories are very enjoyable, a very good read, the right length, showing an economy of expression that make it clear that Ms Lindsay is a professional writer, who knows exactly where to put the details and where to add the fine point of a story. This does not mean they are dry stories, quite the opposite. She has very human characters, moved by ideas that are now not current (we are talking about another society in another time), but which resonate now with us.

I can recommend this book because it was full of fine surprises and a touch of sensitivity which, as it was unexpected, made me enjoy the book the more.
