I think the story itself is very good, but the narrative bounced around too much to really get a flow of the story. It was like riding in a car where the driver is constantly over correcting, so you are constantly sliding left and right between the seat belt and the door. Some of the dialog felt superficial, forced or out of character for the person speaking.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, and I gave an honest review.

I always wonder what is wrong with my reading perception when I find I do not care for a book that is very well-reviewed both here and on Amazon. I tried hard with _Shut In_ and found the writing to be very good, but I struggled very much with liking the characters. Maybe it is just where I am coming from, mentally and emotionally, right now and I would like the novel more at some point down the road. I do not enjoy knocking books, especially ones I can tell have heart and are well-written. This one just is not for me, I guess.… (mais)

Amber is writing a book, and has a heart attack. During all the confusion and trauma that ensues, someone, somehow steals her book. Angered by this, Amber spirals out of control, losing her partner, her family, most of her money and, most important, the life she has carved out for herself as an author, mother and partner. This is her story. I found the story interesting, but definitely filled with lots of negatives that occur in Amber’s life. Just about everything bad that could happen to a person, happens to her. The book was not uplifting for me, but it was honest and very realistically written. The characters of Amber and her partner were well done. The way ins which Amber so easily slipped back into addiction and substance abuse, along with her constant denials and refusal to get help were very true to form. I do wish the author had focused a bit more on some of the positives, to better balance the many, many negatives. However, doing that may have mitigated the message the author was trying to get across about how fragile everything is for all of us, how quickly it can all come crashing down. I think anyone who enjoys a realistic, well done story, with a bit of mystery and definitely some romance and family thrown in will enjoy this one. I know I did. The basic plot about someone stealing a creative work is well done, interesting and unique. I applaud the author for creativity in this area. I received this book from Goodreads to read and honestly approve.… (mais)

Amber Tyler has the perfect life or so it seems. But her world is about to come crashing down on her. She is desperately trying to finish her current book, Brain Waves, when a heart attack catches her unawares. While she was struggling to get up, she knocks over her lemonade; the spill causes the death of her laptop where her book resided. Other than a printed copy, it was the only place she had her book saved. Once she recuperated, she realized she’d need to use the printed book to complete her novel. But something was wrong. Not all of it was there. Was she losing her mind? Where were the rest of the pages?

The missing book from the laptop and the missing printed pages were enough to cause Amber to lose momentum. Instead of focusing on finishing Brain Waves, she turned instead to an autobiography. It didn’t do well, but what was doing well was Brain Waves. What? Yes, someone else was busy selling and promoting her book under their own name.

I can’t say I’ve ever read a book, a mystery yet, about copyright infringement at its center. But the copyright infringement became secondary as the protagonist sunk deeper into self-despair; alcoholism; and drugs. She spent money like she had a ‘Bill Gates’ in her pocket. I love it when authors practically beg me to place my hands around a protagonist’s neck and choke the life out of her, but it wouldn’t have done any good. Amber was hell bent on self-destruction.

The ‘justice’ seemed incomplete for me. For fear of giving spoilers, I really can’t give any additional information about that. I also wanted my readers to know that the categories in Amazon included Literature & Fiction; Mystery, Thriller & Suspense; and Psychological Thrillers. While the book description denotes it is also Gay & Lesbian, that category is not included. Amazon’s book description read in part:

“Amber Tyler is living every author’s dream: her books are all best sellers and she writes full time. She has worked hard and is well-accomplished in her career, and she has the support and love of her beautiful children and girlfriend.”

I rated Copyright A Novel 3.5 out of 5.
