Hanging my hat for a while in the PNW, I figured it might be good to read this. It wasn't exactly what I expected or wanted. I think I would have been happier with a collection of short fiction. What this was, was a collection of essays from Independent book sellers in the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (and librarians). Because of this, Idaho is included in the PNW (as it sometimes is) and Alaska (which is too North, too West and boarders too much of the Pacific to really be part of the Pacific North West).

There are some good essays in here. But as a whole, they were a little scattered. In general the offerings from the various states, are about how great the state is and how happy the author is to call that state home. So more about state loyalty than PNW/Cascadia culture. Some of these essays are from people who moved to the respective state and adopted it as home. Others are nostalgic looks at the state in years past.

On the upside, most of the authors work for bookstores, love books and can write. Village Books in Bellingham, WA is well represented. Bookstore Mecca--Powell Books, is represented by author Gigi Little in perhaps the finest essay in the entire book. On a whole, the Oregon authors were best, Washington authors less consistent but still good. Idaho and Alaska didn't do as much for me.
