This book starts out pretty quick and it took me for a ride into the town of Oasis, Florida, where a woman arrives as a new resident and opens up a bookstore. There is a mystery in Oasis and something stalks the streets. Residents of the town have gone missing for years and no one seems to know what has happened to them. There is also some mystery surrounding a house called "End House", which the locals think is haunted.

Everything is fine and dandy in the daytime, but when the sun goes down, it is a whole different story. The woman and her friends go to a party at End House and that is when all hell breaks loose. Very atmospheric and gripping. The more I became involved with the story, the faster I started reading it to see where this book was going to take me. So what is stalking the streets of Oasis, you ask, well you will just have to read the book to find out. Four stars on this one.

MEET ME IN MAINE by Susanne Leist kept me engaged throughout the story. However, at times, I found myself confused by the many characters and found myself looking back to determine who was good or bad. And then, it still wasn't clear. Seems like all the characters were shallow, which left me to wonder more about their back story and how they came to be in certain positions. To me, most were just 'names' and characters I couldn't connect with or be passionate about. So there was no emotion expressed if they died.

The story is told from Elizabeth's POV, and the two girls seem to be present every time the curse struck leaving me to wonder if both her and Scarlett were causing the havoc. I also came across a few typos and added/deleted words which caused me some pause; one I remember is using 'bowel' instead of 'bowl'.

I do feel the author would have a much better story if she were to 'thicken-up' the book some by adding more detail and character back story. It would have been interesting to learn how some of the town's main characters (self-proclaimed experts and saviors) reacted and fought against the curse attacks over the years. I also had some questions unanswered and hope the author addresses them in the next installment of the series. MEET ME IN MAINE is still worth reading if you are a fan of suspense and the supernatural.

This is not my normal genre, in fact, it's the first book I've read about Vampires and humans living together in a community. Unfortunately, I did not realize that this was the second book of a series and since I hadn't read the first book, I found myself at a loss as to how this all came about as well as the background of the characters; they were just names to me.

The story focuses on four main characters: Linda, Shana, Gregg, and Todd; Linda being the primary, a human, who is pursued by lover hybrids Todd and Gregg, Shana is also human and Linda's best friend. Their town, Oasis, and way of life is being threatened by a rogue group of evil vampires who want to destroy all the hybrids - half human / half vampire living there and the town itself.

As the story progresses, I am left wondering who was either good or evil several times as Todd and Gregg pleaded their case. Finally, all is clear with 25% of the book remaining. Now, it's a matter of survival and edge of your seat suspense.

The story is well written and edited with detailed descriptions thoughout the pages. I would, however, recommend reading book one before taking on Prey for the Dead to better understand the history and current storyline.

I received a KINDLE Edition of this book from the author through a giveaway on FaceBook and the following is my honest opinion.

Being a child of the 1950’s as I read this book I heard the song “Behind the Green Door” playing in the back of my mind.

The specific lines from this song I heard I felt related to this stiry are:
Midnight one more night without sleepin' -
Watchin' till the morning comes creepin'.
Green door what's that secret you're keepin'?

Wish they'd let me in
So I could find out
What's behind the green door.

Door slammed hospitality's thin there.
Wonder just what's goin' on in there.

Saw an eyeball peepin' through a smokey cloud
Behind the green door.

In “The Dead Game” Susanne Leist has crafted a wondrous conglomeration of genres to create a story which is sure to please the widest audience possible; with elements of mystery, vampires, murder, intrigue and romance how can you go wrong?

If you can remember all of the haunted houses you’ve gone through for Halloween with all the twists and turns you had to go before you reached the exit, then you’ll understand what Linda and her friends went through after they’d entered the old abandoned mansion known as “End House.” The only difference is the ones you went through had been in fun, but theirs had been real.

Just as the characters had to walk a twisting, turning path within the mansion; so does the storyline twist and turn unexpectedly; making for a page turning reading experience that you don’t want to put the book down.

The juxtaposition which exists between the outward appearance of the ocean-side town of Oasis, Florida and everything else there; especially the secrets everyone apparently has, makes for the perfect backdrop for the mansion itself.

It’s therefore not surprising I’m giving Ms. Leist 5 STARS for her endeavor here.
