This short nonfiction piece is about a narrator who is in a wheelchair and heading to a protest. The story includes three scenes, one before the protest, one during, and one after. In the scene after the protest, the speaker is in jail and observing a girl who is also in jail with her tell the jailers how to lay her down. The most telling line is the final line of this piece, which says: “The women cover her with a blanket and turn toward me to leave. Their faces, one brown and one white, are wide open with emotion. Not pity or disgust or resentment—I can recognize those. This is less familiar.” These lines, for me, show the spectrum of emotions people feel when regarding those with disabilities, the multitude of stigmas attached.… (mais)
