This book contains lots of paintings, all captioned with explanations of the techniques used and how they fit into Cézanne’s oeuvre as a whole. I’ve always associated Cézanne with still lives of fruit and landscapes of Mont Sainte-Victoire, so I did not know until I read this book how many portraits and allegories he painted. However, the writing felt like it was either a French-to-English translation or a French writer writing in English but thinking in French. I would also have liked to know who translated the correspondence quoted in the book (because I assume Cézanne and Zola didn’t write in English).… (mais)
