Downright Dead is the second book in the B&B Spirits Mystery series. I really love the humor and the characters in this series. The stories never fail to have me laughing out loud. I can't imagine the annoyance of having a supremely irritating ex-husband come back as a ghost....and in this newest book, Holly Davis has to contend with two spirits. Twice the irritation! :)

While it isn't necessary to read the first book before reading Downright Dead, the first book is a great read and I highly recommend it.

Holly Davis turned the family home, Holly Grove, into a B&B so that she could afford to keep it. Soon after opening her B&B, the ghost of her ex-husband Burl showed up and caused quite a stir. The B&B was featured on a television show, Inquiring Minds, where footage clearly proved that that the haunting was real. But then Burl moved on....ascended....joined the choir invisible...whatever you want to call it. The ghost is gone. Holly is relieved....and then horrified. Sylvia Martin, host of Inquiring Minds, uses a sneaky clause in the contract Holly signed to demand a follow-up visit. Not only is she bringing the film crew back to Holly Grove.....but she's also dared a snarky internet sensation to come de-bunk the haunting. Holly is unsure what to do......since the ghost is gone. Just as the follow-up production is hitting an all time embarrassing low, one of the guests is pushed off the widow's walk, crashing to the ground below. That solves the ghost problem...but the even bigger question is which person is a murderer? And why?

I am definitely going to continue reading this cozy mystery series. Holly and her staff are such a hoot. And the ghost(s) never fail to be entertaining. The mystery in this newest book clipped right along at a nice pace. I love the mix of humor and mystery. The B&B/ghost background theme didn't over power the mystery but added to it. This is just an all-around fun, entertaining cozy!

Even after his death, Holly Davis' cheating, philandering husband Burl won't get out of her life. Just as she is toasting his abrupt exit from her life following a plane crash, his ghost appears. Burl needs her help with some unfinished business so he can move on to the afterlife. St. Peter won't let him in the gate until he clears up his mess. She reluctantly agrees to investigate the drug smugglers her husband got involved with so that Burl can rest in peace and to save her beloved B&B from the damage he caused their finances. Holly is under the gun....she has 30 days to get Burl into heaven or be stuck with his ghost for the rest of her life. Throw in a touch of romance, some great one-liners and lots of zany antics, and you have a great start to a new cozy mystery series!

I like Holly as a main character. She is intelligent and driven. She loves her family's plantation home, Holly Grove, and is dedicated to keep it in the family by operating a B&B. She is intelligent, sarcastic and quirky...she can't cook, she's not above using feminine wiles to get her way and she's not about to take any more of Burl's crap, dead or alive. The banter between Holly and the ghost is cute, and added a lot of humor to the story. My favorite side character is Nelda, the B&B's housekeeper. I wish she had been developed a bit more, but I love her personality.

All in all, a great start to a new series. A second book, Downright Dead, will be out in September 2018. A third book, Hog Wild Dead, is in the works. I will definitely be reading more in this series!

This is the first novel in a new cozy mystery series. This book doesn't waste any time in the beginning, jumping right into the action. Holly is the owner of a struggling bed and breakfast. Then the ghost of her dead husband, Burl, shows up. This is both a blessing and a curse for her, as the popularity of her B&B soars amongst the ghost hunting set. Also in the mix is Jake, a former boyfriend, Jake's missing father, and a drug smuggling ring that Burl was a part of and that lead to his death.

I liked all of the characters except for Burl. I found him annoying and abrasive. Other than that, the characters were delightful and interesting. The plot moved along briskly and this was a quick read. I really hope that Burl does not return for subsequent books. That could be a deal breaker for me.

This has all the makings of a great series. It is off to a strong start, and I hope it continues. I would be happy to read the next book in the series.

I received an ARC from the Cozy Mystery Review Crew in exchange for my honest opinion.

Better Dead by Pamela Kopfler is the first A B&B Spirits Mystery. Holly Davis owns Holly Grove Plantation in Delta Ridge, Louisiana which she turned into a bed and breakfast three years prior. Holly’s husband, Burl passed away three months ago just before he was served with divorce papers for his cheating ways (and so much more). Holly is celebrating the end of her mourning with champagne and raises a toast to Burl. The next thing she knows he is there before her (then chaos ensues). The next morning Holly wakes up on the floor with white powder all around her (long story) and the Deltas are peering at her through the window. Burl was not a drunken hallucination and he cannot move on until Holly helps with his unfinished business. He only has until midnight on Halloween to make things right or he will be stuck at Holly Grove forever (Holly’s worst nightmare). Holly is the only person who can see and hear Burl. Before his death, Burl was involved in smuggling drugs through Holly Grove and he believes busting up the ring is his unfinished business. Holly agrees to help Burl in exchange for him haunting the house during the Haunted Pilgrimage Tour of Homes. Holly needs to turn a profit, or she is in danger of losing Holly Grove (thanks to Burl). Then Holly’s old high school flame, Jake McCann returns to town and wishes to stay at Holly Grove. Unknown to Holly, Jake is an ICE agent trying to stop the drugs being smuggled through the plantation. He is as handsome as ever and Holly is still attracted to him. However, it is hard to flirt with your deceased husband in the room. Can Holly discover who is behind the drug smuggling and put a stop to it? Why has Jake returned to town? Watch Holly juggle her duties at the B&B along with Burl, Jake, the Deltas, and a housekeeper who wants the ghost out of the house.

Better Dead is a Southern cozy mystery with paranormal elements. The story is told from Holly and Jake’s POV. I prefer stories that are written from one viewpoint (preferably third person). It allows readers to stay immersed in the story and not be distracted by the changing voice. Better Dead is a humorous story with one zany antic after another throughout the whole book. While I do not enjoy reading these type of stories, many other readers find them delightful. I prefer intelligent, strong female characters. I was never drawn into Better Dead. I read it, but just found it unbelievable. Some examples are: The Deltas believing fire hydrant foam dust to be cocaine and that Holly has a drug issue (the gossip quickly spread throughout the whole town); the gold sex toy that Holly breaks and then needs fixed (because she is snooping through her guests luggage); the housekeeper who brings in a priest and a medium to get rid of the ghost; housekeeper and Holly wearing garlic to keep the ghost at bay; Holly runs a B&B, but she cannot cook (or reheat) without destroying food (which happens in the book). I was curious why the B&B served dinner? Especially since the housekeeper cooks the food in advance (she does not stay until dinner) and then Holly has to reheat it (would you pay for this service). Like I mentioned before, many people will find these things hilarious (I am just not one of them). There was too much of it along with the bickering between Holly and Burl (tiresome and repetitive) and Holly ogling Jake (and thinking about him). I believe the author was trying for screwball comedy type humor (but did not pull it off). The mystery is in there among all the zaniness. The culprit can be identified before the reveal (do not let the crazy distract you). Holly gets herself into one dangerous situation after another since she refuses to listen to anyone (which gets her into trouble and then she needs rescuing). The characters lacked development and Burl was annoying. Better Dead was too long (I did not think the book would ever end). Better Dead was not my cup of tea.
