I really don't feel as though I can give this book a star rating. Michelle tells her story forthrightly and with honesty, but without the type of specific detail that would make it even harder to read than it already is.

Honestly, this is a story about the worst of human nature. If you don't believe there truly is evil in the world, this book will most certainly convince you.

Michelle's story of a horrific kidnapping really starts considerably before she is held as a prisoner. Her childhood, prior to being kidnapped, was no picnic to say the least and one can't help but feel as though the early childhood experiences somehow made her more likely to be victimized later.

I do admire Michelle's ability to recover from what she went through and her very, very selfless love for her son. I admire her fortitude and her honesty. All in all though, this book is really not one that can leave you feeling anything other than disgusted and infuriated that things like this happen in the world.

Although I read this book I will be refraining from giving it a rating simply because I don't believe in judging a story like this one in 'stars' for how much I 'liked' it.

All I will say is that my heart broke a thousand times over for all four girls and much like Jaycee Dugard and Amanda Lindhout, their stories won't be leaving me.

Wow. This memoir, written by a survivor of eleven years of captivity by a horrible man, was so moving. It was difficult to read at times because of how awful some of the things she went through were. One thing that really sticks out is how she remained positive and hopeful throughout her entire captivity. Meanwhile I can’t even stay positive and hopeful through a year of unemployment. The story itself was written very matter of fact, which made for an easy read. I can’t say I was inspired after this book. I’m more scared of the world now for sure but I’m also very grateful I’ve never had to undergo rape or abuse or anything this person went through. It definitely gives me a different perspective on my life.… (mais)
