Talking about characters with disabilities in Jane Eyre, Little Women, What Katy Did, Heidi, Pollyanna, Seven Little Australians, and The Secret Garden (and with a followup on later and modern fiction) and how the only possibilities seen were for the character to either be miraculously cured (usually after they'd learned their moral lesson, paralysis providing a forceful transition between a girlhood where tomboyishness is tolerated and adulthood where a woman must become the unselfish “Heart of the House”) or to die. Occasionally a non-POV character might be able to survive and perhaps even get around on crutches, but this was portrayed as not really walking and they were always to be pitied – never seen as a whole person.

So, pretty terrible treatment of people with disabilities, and also makes very clear the strong, manly vs submissive, womanly boxes that children have been forced into in the process of growing up.

The author has also written a YA novel “A Different Life”, and writes positively of “I Can Jump Puddles” by Alan Marshall (autobiographical, re polio); “Warrior Scarlet” by Rosemary Sutcliffe (herself disabled); “See Ya Simon” by David Hill; “Flawed Glass” by Ian Strachan; “Blabbermouth” and “Sticky Beak” by Morris Gleitzman.… (mais)
