Midnight Indulgences by Alexis Ke is the story of Lucia and Frederick. Lucia is the night shift head nurse at a local hospital. She has been working there for five years and has decided to move in order to make a change in her life. She is bored with the town and at loose ends since the break-up of her last relationship. Lucia has come to work to complete her shift and to turn in her two week resignation. Frederick is the security supervisor at the same hospital that Lucia works at. He has been infatuated with Lucia for over a year but never had the nerve to ask her out. When he finds out that she plans to resign he decides to do everything he can to change her mind.

I have to admit I really did not enjoy this story but the plot idea was very sound. Since the action of the story takes place over the course of one night, I really enjoyed that the chapter breaks were named after the hours rather than the typical “chapter 1,” etc. It helped to give the reader a sense of time and how the character would feel at that time of night. The story felt awkwardly written, however. The wording and phrasing was uncomfortable to read and seems that it could use the help of a good editor. One major issue I had was word choice. There was one page where the author used the word “bosom” twice to describe “breast” but later used the word “cock.” Bosom and cock just don’t go together, so the words felt almost as if they were being forced out of the author.

Some other concerns I had was that there was no clear difference between the voice of the heroine and the hero. Since both of the characters felt the same, the switching back and forth of POV was rather confusing at times. The interactions between the heroine and the hero felt forced as well. There was one scene where the heroine was daydreaming about the hero in the middle of a major trauma. Alarms are going off, things are beeping, staff is screaming and all Lucia and Frederick can do is think about sex? That was very unrealistic to me and really pulled me out of the story. Due to this and a few other reasons, I honestly could not believe the HEA at the end.
