Abstract

This project explored culturally responsive approaches in education. This included studying the
origins, history, and varied terminology of the topic. Further research provided an understanding
of the benefits of this approach, the educational inequalities it addressed, and how to implement
it authentically. Following research, lesson and unit plans were created for the eighth grade
orchestra classroom. The resulting curriculum placed emphasis on academic rigor and
interdisciplinary topics, chose texts and music that gave opportunities for critical reflection,
created means for students to demonstrate and expand upon their cultural competence, and
allowed for students to critique discourse of power.… (mais)
