Is happiness the opposite of depression? Is it temporary? Is it achievable? Linda Johnson’s 7 Secrets starts by debunking some popular myths about happiness and goes on to a definition by quote, using quotes (e-linked to the internet) from sources as varied as Shakespeare and Ghandi. Concluding that “happiness is your personal responsibility … both a choice and a habit,” the author goes on to offer ways we can practice being happy, thus becoming good at it.

The secrets offered in this book range from savoring the moment to connecting with your soul, and each concept is explained in a subsequent chapter. Stories from Buddhism, Cherokee tales, and even modern movies illustrate the themes, giving a new tinge to old advice, even if readers may have heard some of it before. Simple exercises, often using pencil and paper (or a document on the computer) encourage the reader to see how to apply what they learn, seeing past the events that define them, changing underlying beliefs, and redefining themselves with the potential to be happy.

While the seven secrets approach might sound glib, and some of the suggestions are easily found elsewhere, this book is not trite, and it offers some seriously good advice. I found the reminder not to take things personally particularly helpful, and the curious illustration of seeing what we expect to see in Superman or Clark Kent. But another reader might relate more to learning the signs and symptoms of harmful stress and how to deal with them. There's something for all of us, all learning and practicing happiness. The writing is clear, personal and informative. The exercises are simple and logical. And the style is pleasingly conversational, engendering a feeling that the author has practiced all of this.
