Johnson's poems that expressed the precariousness of life for Black americans, the anger and fear at fathers who cannot protect or fully prepare their children for the realities of violence and injustice, resonated most with me. There's a richness to this collection that definitely eluded me, feeling outside often the larger project of the collection and references to cultural artifacts and figures, but nonetheless I appreciated Johnson's lyricism and instances of (gasp) rhyme.
