The stories presented here are easily adapted to real life scenarios, so don't just think of it as a collection of well written erotica by some of the best writers of the genre; instead, think of it as an instruction manual - Intro to Bondage.

In Teresa Noelle Roberts's "Suffer for Me," we learn that bondage isn't just rope and leather. That our restraints can be mental as well as physical. We also learn that being climatically controlled can cause the same yearning arousal that handcuffs and servitude bring. And best of all, it also teaches us to remember that tingling sensation of concentrated lust time and again.

In "Melting Ice," Shoshanna Evers informs us that a bondage fantasy doesn't have to have two people. A pair of handcuffs and an ice cube is all Amanda Scott needs to get rocks off.

Kay Jaybee pushes us further from just experimenting with the kinkier side of sex in "The Cupboard Under the Stairs," when a dominate invites someone else into their sex chamber.

Each story is carefully crafted to yank on our lusts (no pun intended - or perhaps it is) and I can imagine Bussel having a hard time to select which to use. This is a wonderful diverse collection of tales with something to offer just about everyone, although it will probably be of more interest to readers who are either new to the scene, or only casual participants. Those who are already heavily invested in bondage and submission as a lifestyle may find this a little light, but it's still a great read.

The collection starts off, rather appropriately, with Melting Ice - a tale of experimental self-bondage involving one woman, a pair of handcuffs, and a key trapped in an ice cube. From there, it progresses through intimate scenes involving pairs of lovers, more intense scenes involving multiple submissives (and switches), and some outright exhibitionist displays.

There's a lot of focus on the anticipation, on the sensuality of being restrained, as opposed to the more punished aspects of being bound. More often than not, it takes several pages before a cuff, collar, or rope even makes an appearance, but the 'threat' looms large, drawing the reader into the story. Most of the stories revolve around existing relationships, so there's an element of safety involved, although there is still very much a power exchange to be respected.

Female domination seems to be a predominant theme here, which is probably the reason why my spouse and I had so much fun with the stories. There are plenty of tales where the men are in control, however, and even some where who's in control isn't readily apparent . . . and where that control shifts rather abruptly. What's more, the focus of these stories is rather refreshingly on the bondage and the exchange of power, with sex secondary in most cases, and almost an afterthought in others.

The Perfect Submissive by Kay Jaybee

The Perfect Submissive is the very first book I have ever begun to read and had to put down and say, “No, I cannot and will not read this.” This book just has it all wrong in my opinion of the BDSM lifestyle. That very world in which I live in with my Dominant. My Master. My Husband. In our world, Dominants are not abusive. They do not take pleasure in bringing a person to their knees in a cowered position. A Dominant in our world takes care of the most precious thing in their life. Their submissive.

In The Perfect Submissive, I only made it through part of Chapter 4. I had to stop after the Domme had cut off the submissive’s t-shirt. Not her submissive, in the sense as I know one being a submissive, but simply a woman she felt was submissive. That was the third thing that had me cringing. The second time had been when she had a man named Sam who was an artist on his knees and she felt so in control and pleased with herself that her fake bout of anger had him cowered already. The first incident had unsettled me, but I kept reading, which is when Mrs. Laura Peterson had told her clerk to not masturbate as she’d know if she had or not. This is after she had taken her clerk, Jess to the 5th floor, which contained the “sex rooms” and had made her watch a scene between a Domme and her submissive man.

The reason that first one unsettled me, is that for the last 2 years I have been in a Dominant/submissive (D/s) relationship. From all I have learned from talking with other Dominants online, and submissive’s, one does not just assume that any submissive is theirs for the taking. Only the ones that they have negotioated with. Come to an agreement with. One does not just pick a submissive and begin to treat them as theirs without giving them rules. This is done AFTER negotations and rules have been made clear. NOT before. Not in a Safe, Sane, Consensual relationship. Not with a Dominant who is worth anything.

In the BDSM , Safe, Sane and Consensual is almost a mantra. It’s what all good Dominants want. It’s what all smart submissive’s want. At the different BDSM forums where I have membership, it’s common to hear both Dominants and submissives speak with pure disdain for any Dom/me such as the one in this story. The submissive has not had a chance to know what she is getting into. She’s being forced into in my opinion.

The last thing that really did it for me, is the very reason I put the book down and will not be picking it up again. Nor will I be reading any more of Kay Jaybee’s books. The of BDSM she shows is not the one I know. It’s not the one that is covered by the Safe, Sane Consensual rules. Okay, I know. What happened, angel?!

In Chapter 4, after taking her clerk, Jess Sanders to the elusive 5th floor where only those guided by Mrs. Peterson or one of her private staff members is allowed; Laura Peterson orders Jess to sit in a small school room type chair, in a private room that looks very much like a modern school room. Then she steps into a closet from which she appears again shortly dressed as a school marm. Fake little glasses and all. Carrying a long, thin hooked school cane. She cuts Jess’ t-shirt off, gags her with it, and then struck her on the breasts with the cane. This is where I stopped reading.


In my opinion, it had already gone too far when she cut the t-shirt off of Jess, but when she struck her with the cane, it became definite abuse to me. Jess was not her submissive. Laura had never spoken to her about engaging in role-play. Therefore, to me, this was pure abuse.

It’s sad that so many writers who write about BDSM and Dominant/submissive relationships seem to think that it’s all about the Dominant being scary, in control and the submissive being a timid, cowering doormat. This is not the BDSM lifestyle I know. In the relationship I am in, my Dominant is stern, but loving. Fiercly possessive, but gentle. I am both submissive and independent. My Sir loves this about me. He doesn’t want a simpering doormat. No good Dominant would. This is the type of D/s relationship I know. Not the one that Ms. Jaybee and so many others write about.
