ABSTRACT:
For some time there has been a need for an Australian Standard to cover the testing and performance of solar water heating systems. This paper describes a proposed standard method of performance testing and rating these systems. The method considered is to test the complete system rather than the individual components. The rationale behind this decision is discussed, the test philosophy and proposed method is presented and the dimensionless rating factors defined and described. The validity of the test procedure and some of the assumptions made have been tested using a mathematical model of the proposed test procedure and sequence. It is concluded that the method chosen is reasonable and that an experimental validation phase should commence.… (mais)

ABSTRACT:
Solar energy could, by the end of the century, be making an important contribution to Australia's primary energy if it is given the necessary support now. It can do this, firstly by solar heat generating systems, integrated with conventional fuels, supplying heat for industrial processes. Secondly, cellulose produced by photosynthesis can be converted to ethanol, which is a liquid fuel suitable for motor vehicles. The combination of solar generated heat and renewable fuels such as ethanol could provide a permanent replacement for fossil fuels. The research programmes needed to make this possible would involve a considerable expansion of the present effort and would include projects concerned with the collection of solar energy, storage of heat, energy transfer, and systems and applications engineering. The renewable fuels programme would be a multi-disciplinary one, incorporating projects on forest and crop productivity, land use, environment impact, energetic efficiency, improvements to hydrolysis and fermentation processes and applications engineering.… (mais)

ABSTRACT:
The International Solar Energy Society (ISES) was founded in 1954 at Tempe/Phoenix, Arizona. ISES serves as a forum for the interchange of ideas, experiences and developments in the solar energy field. As a non-profit, educational and scientific organization, ISES helps to advance solar energy use through education and communications. With almost 8,000 members in more than 55 countries around the world, ISES promotes research and progress in all areas of solar energy technology. The Society gathers, compiles, and disseminates solar energy information, promotes public education programs, and fosters scientific and technological applications of solar energy. As the Society has grown, its publications and sponsorship of technical conferences have expanded to meet the solar energy needs of a world-wide community.… (mais)
