H. L. Humes (1926–1992)

Cannot remember the last time I read a book from 50+ years ago that had such strong resonance with the world in which we currently live—and not in just a metaphorical way (the way you might say there are elements of “1984” in our culture, or of “Infinite Jest” too), but in writing about American and European politics, in the narrative around massacres of people and destruction of villages that some refuse to believe, etc… This book is long and Humes could probably have used a stronger editor; it could have come down 5-10% with no loss of its power, But it’s a great book.… (mais)
