Book 2, Samson no longer has a 1940's state of mind as his past is explained. It helps to read book 1 as Samson continues to pursue the mysterious XRay. The story is action-driven and gritty, and the stakes are raised.

A gritty and Western feel, Samson lives with a 1940s state of mind. The plot is gritty as Samson exploits his PI position to obtain information in a grey way. The story is descriptive and immersive.

I don't typically read blood and gore horror but I had read a few of Hughes short stories. These were always well thought out, if not a bit disturbing, and I was curious about how he could do with a longer novel. What I found was a twisty/twisted collection of stories all tied together into a book with in a book. You have to read to find out what that means.

There is a lot of shock, blood, and a bit of sexual content. There are no warm fuzzies in this book, just a lot of brutal slasher stories. The psychos in the stories kill to kill because they like it. No spoilers in this review but do look for the Easter egg in the patient files. You'll know it when you see it.

Since I don't usually read these types of novels, I can only say think Alice Cooper, Friday the 13th, peeping Tom, and psychos all rolled into a book. That's White Walls and Straightjackets.
