"Life is a tragicomedy"

This book is amazing. I haven't read too many coming-of-age stories so I haven't much to compare this story to, but it is hilarious and quite serious at the same time. It was interesting and it woke my empathetic side up.
The story itself is very interesting and I love the ending although there is a bit of a cliffhanger. I love the way this story is told, and I truly enjoyed all the hilarious and humiliating stories Ruth tells from her life.
The book is made even better by all the great characters. At times, I laughed so hard at their antics that people were staring. I truly loved reading this book.

I absolutely loved it!

This is book 1 in a series of 3.

The story is told in the first person by Ruth Roth, a young, Jewish, Australian girl, who shares with us her trials and tribulations of growing up, marriage, parenthood and beyond. I love that she has sarky, expressive pet names for people she dislikes, and that two of her cousins do not even merit a capital letter when their names are written - which speaks volumes about their value in Ruth's eyes. The story and characters feel very real - perhaps autobiographical - and brought back some lovely (and some not so lovely) memories of my own family interactions.

Houseman's witty, innuendo-laden, satirical writing style appeals to my sense of humour, and it wasn't long before I was crying with laughter. I laughed so hard at some parts that I could no longer read through the stream of tears, and my lungs burned through overexertion!

I will definitely be reading more from Houseman in the future.

My thanks to author Paula Houseman for a free digital copy of this book to review.

Cupid F*cks Up is the second book in the Ruth Roth series, and picks up Ruth's story shortly after we left her in book 1.

It's the same old sarky Ruth with her doubts and fears, once again hilariously told, and this time we have a birth, a couple of deaths, two marriages, the prospect of reincarnation (for those of us who believe in that sort of thing) and the cliffhanger which provides the story link into book 3.

This is another laugh-out-loud read which I thoroughly enjoyed. The circumstances Ruth relates to us in her own inimitable voice, are all perfectly believable, and I found myself nodding along, and again making comparisons with events amongst my own friends and family.

If you enjoyed book 1, you'll absolutely love this one. I'm now off to read My T(r)oyboy is a Twat (Ruth Roth Series Book 3)

Another resounding hit from Ms Houseman! I want to give this entire series 6 stars!

This is the third book in the Ruth Roth series, and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them.

There is so much I love and admire about Ruth Roth, which again comes out in this book - her observational humour, strong family bonds, strength of character, her ability to survive the craziness around her, and even her potty mouth! I have also loved her vivid descriptions of extreme characters like Hector and neighbours Bin and Bitty, who would be the butt of my jokes too; and I can definitely relate to having an Olive Portnoy in the neighbourhood.

I have really enjoyed this entire series (I might have said that already!) - I love the style of writing; the witty often caustic humour, and its authenticity. I have laughed uproariously, felt both elated and desperately sad for Ruth at times; and with her marriage seemingly in trouble, I’ve willed her to find happiness, in whatever form that would take - not Andy though!

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book and the Ruth Roth series.

My thanks to author Paula Houseman for a free digital copy of this book to review.
