- Literary scholar, professor, and translator William Milne Holton (1931-2000) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1954, and shortly thereafter received his L.L.B. from Harvard Law School in 1957. Holton practiced law in Chatanooga, Tennessee, for nearly a year before continuing his education at Yale University, receiving his Ph.D. in literature in 1965. Holton began his teaching career at the University of Maryland in 1961, a tenure that lasted until his retirement in 1999. Holton's publications include a volume on Stephen Crane, The Cylinder of Vision (1972) and several volumes of Macedonian, Polish, Austrian, and Serbian poetry, for which he acted as both translator and editor.
