The Backroads of Route 66, another interesting book from Jim Hinckley, offers a fun twist on the usual Rte 66 trip, short excursions just off the beaten path.

I have only driven the length of Rte 66 twice, the first for pure fun back in the late 70s. Other than that, I have traversed sections when I could or when it made for a nice side trip. But with these sidetrips, I think another full trip might be in order just to see these detour destinations.

Organized by state, these excursions are more than just another way to enjoy Americana. Putting Rte 66 aside for a moment, anyone who might be visiting any of these areas or even living close by might benefit from this book. Sometimes we miss the places we live the closest to. I lived in NYC for a couple years and didn't make the trip to the Statue of Liberty until I had moved away and took a friend to see the city.

Even if no physical trips are in your immediate future, this will make for some wonderful armchair traveling. The pictures and the explanations of the sights make for great reading. I didn't try it (yet) but street view on maps might even be fun.

Finished Here We Are On Route 66 by Jim Hinckley. The photography was good and picked up the spirit of the culture surrounding this fabled route. But the writing was very disappointing/ I would have loved to help the author to spend less time on the mundane history, like the date that the post office opened and more on the exciting historical background. More research and more excitement could helped the book so much!

Here We Are...on Route 66 by Jim Hinckley is a fun tour of Route 66 that is more than simply a guidebook or tour guide. There are more than enough of them anyway. That said, this is a guidebook for those who want to know a little more about the places they visit rather than just the tourist attractions.

I enjoyed learning a little more about the places I've driven through and by so many times. It has been years since I have driven even a short stretch but there was a time I used it quite a bit, and there was just a feeling and mystique that accompanied even the most mundane trips.

I think most readers will enjoy this look at the cities and towns, and of course many of the attractions, that line Route 66. If you are looking for a simple tour book this may not satisfy, but there are a lot of those available. If you want something that is more like a learned companion for your trip, or just to relive past trips from a new perspective, this will be a wonderful addition to your library.

I thoroughly enjoyed this brief literary trip, with great Kerrick James photographs, east to west on America's Mother Road. The colorful history of these mostly abandoned towns is fascinating. Too young to call it Memory Lane, I did ride its two-lane blacktop on a bus in Kingman, AZ, bound for the Grand Canyon, during a 2004 vacation in Las Vegas. Highly recommended.
