Such a helpful commentary, especially for amateur readers of Homer who may not have a formal background in Greek or Homer. Hexter clarifies confusing or obscure phrases or customs, comments on Fitzgerald's translation, and often simply highlights what he finds interesting or significant. While you could use it as a reference tool, to be opened when you don't understand a passage, I find it valuable to have open alongside of the Fitzgerald text, especially when reading aloud with my children.

My desert island shelf contains all my favorite books which I have encountered since I began reading decades ago. I would want these books if I could have no others.
