A friend (MH) sent me this book in a box of books. I believe I have read this author before though I don't recognize Kendrick Creek setting.
I'm not clear on what Carly (the Foster Mother from the title) promised. She didn't make any big promises to the children within the book--though it is obvious that she wants to keep the 4 siblings together.
I'm not familiar enough with the foster system or adoption to know how her marriage to Mike might affect the adoptions of the girls. (The boys are already adopted by Carly so, barring any abusive behavior etc., I doubt anyone within the system gets to rule on that. I'm guessing since Mike is law enforcement, he might know some of the people who work within the foster system, so maybe that would clear the way? Plus his brother is Carly's lawyer so . . .
I do wish Mike would have gotten over the stigma of not wanting to talk to someone about what happened/his traumas. He did talk to his mom, but that's probably not the same as talking to a professional.
We also never find out why Hannah took so well to Mike (and perhaps to her big brothers) but not as easily to Carly or her younger sister--or why the meltdowns happened.… (mais)
